China officially launched the “no-waste city” pilot program in 16 area
s on Monday as it steps up efforts to recycle its increasing waste stockpile.
The pilot program covers the entirety of 11 cities, including Shenzhen, Guangdong pr
ovince, and Weihai, Shandong province, and sections of the other five cities.
The central government has made arrangements to offer support to
the pilot areas in policy, technology and funding, said Zhuang Guotai, vice-mi
nister of ecology and environment, at the launch ceremony in Shenzhen on Monday.
He said an expert committee has been established to guide the pilot program and
evaluate progress, and seven groups have been put in place to offer technical support.

ction and Quarantine, which supervised entry-exit inspections and quarantines, told China Daily
in 2016 that it was considering revising the regulation so pets could be released after passin

China’s customs officers have seized 2,748 ivory tusks weighing a combined 7.48 metric tons after cracking a major smuggling case.
It was the biggest haul of tusks ever recorded in an anti-smuggling bust conducted in
dependently by customs officers, the General Administration of Customs said on Monday.
The case was solved in March after a combined operation of differ
ent customs offices lasting three months. A total of 238 custo
ms officers took part from cities around the country, including Hefei, Nanjing, Beijing, Fuzhou and Qingdao.
Twenty suspects were detained for further investigation, accor
ding to Sun Zhijie, director of the administration’s anti-smuggling bureau.
Sun said the tusks, illegally shipped from African countries, were imported into China labeled as wood.

ke several years more than the promised time to deliver the aircraft. For instance, both Boeing 787 Drea
mliner and Airbus 380 were delivered years behind schedule. Which means delayed delivery is a norm in the aerospace industry.
In short, it would take decades for Chinese manufacturers to mass-produce airplanes irrespective of the rise and fall of other aircraft makers.
China has made great strides in industrialization during the 40 years of reform and opening
-up, but for that it learned from developed countries’ experiences and put its own experiences to good
use. The complete system of research, development, safety, production, supply chain and service that took Boein
g and Airbus decades to establish should be what Chinese aircraft manufacturers should strive for. With continuo
us efforts, C919 could earn its place in the civil aviation industry－perhaps 10, even 20, years later.
