than 10 million visitors each year. Architect Ieoh Ming Pei

World-renowned architect Ieoh Ming Pei, commonly known as I.M. Pei,

has died at the age of 102 at his home in Manhattan, according to multiple reports on Thursday.

Praised as “one of the most revered architects in the world” by The New York Times, Pei has le

ft the world many of its most well-known architectural designs, among many other intangible heritages.

Pei’s modern designs and high-profile projects led him to be considered one of the most high-prof

ile architects of the 20th century, with the renovation of Paris’ Louvre Museum perhaps the most famo

us project he embarked on. He was also involved in the building of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

What Pei valued most in architecture, as he put it, was that it must “stand th

e test of time”. He also valued simplicity: “The simpler the solution, the more powerful it is,” he once said.

Pei was born in Guangzhou and raised in Hong Kong and

anghai, before moving to the US in 1935. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard’s design s

chool, and spent the early years of his career designing buildings for a real estate developer in New York.

Pei is known for his affection towards precise geometry and design details. He also ha

d a strong reverence for light, as shown in the famous pyramid of the Louvre Museum.

His significant works include the Jacob K Javits Convention Center in Manhattan (1979 to 1986), the Morto

n H Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas (1982 to 1989), the Bank of China Tower in Hong K

ong (1982 to 1989), and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar (2003 to 2008).

Senior Colonel Zhou Bo, director of the Center for Secur

Cooperation at the ministry’s Office for International Military Cooperation, said that comp

ared with other branches of the military, the PLA Navy plays a relatively larger role in protecting China’s overseas inter

ests and maintaining security in key sea lanes such as the Gulf of Aden and waters off Somalia.

“The PLA Navy is at the forefront of proving that the Chinese milita

ry is an open, cooperative and competent force for peace,” he said, adding that the PLA Navy has f

requently participated in humanitarian rescue missions, naval escorts, joint exercises and exchanges in past years.

“Through these non-war military operations, the Chinese Navy has also improved its capability and operability in dis

More than 41 percent of children and teenagers who sleep

too little use electronic devices such as computer tablets and mobile phones, the survey fou

nd, and youths whose parents use smartphones in front of them are more likely to have less sleep.

Other factors, such as noise and light pollution, contributed to the problem, the report said.

The survey also indicated that good sleep results in higher efficiency in study. Students who sleep longer generally fini

sh homework in two and three hours per day, while those who sleep less require four to six hours.

Gao Xuemei, vice-president of the society, said studies have shown that decreasing sle

eping time for children and teenagers has been a global trend in the past 10 years, but the problem appears to be

worse in East Asia, including China, largely due to a heavier load of school homework.

Ahmad Khan said he watched as a man was shot dead in his

A total of 49 people were killed in the mosque attacks on Friday. The massacre has stunned residents, not just because it happen

ed there but also because it was planned to show the world that even the most peaceful places are not immune to terror.

Australian citizen Brenton Tarrant, 28, has been charged with one count of murder. Two other peo

ple remain in police custody. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described it as “one of New Zealand’s darkest days.”

Khan wasn’t the only member of his family touched by the shootings. A few blocks away

, at the Al Noor mosque, Khan’s uncle is believed to be one of 41 people gunned down there while praying.

On Saturday, families waited patiently as officials worked to identify bodies. Yet while confirmation will bring some closure, questio

ns will linger as to how such a horrifying event can happen in a country many consider safe.

”We felt it was such a safe city, such a safe country,” a 30-year-

old construction project manager, who did not want to be named, told CNN. “The hatred has spread everywhere.”

Located in Shanghai’s Jing’an district, Caojiadu neig

hborhood, which covers 1.5 square kilometers, is home to around 33,000 households and 82,000 residents.

To promote community governance, the neighborhood has launched various projects si

nce 2012 to facilitate communication between residents and enhance “neighborly spirit”.

One of the most successful activities is its rooftop garden project.

“Our rooftop garden began with the Meilian building in 2015, with support from enterprises a

nd managed by residents,” said Wang Yanfeng, deputy director of the Caojiadu neighborhood Party working committee.

It all started with 14 containers on the rooftop to grow vegetables and flowers. Each miniature garden is taken care of by two fa

milies, of which one has at least one elderly person at home and the other has one or more children.

Harvested vegetables are sent to the neighborhood’s senior residents,

cooked for the nutritious community lunch or sold during charity bazaars, Wang said.

The miniature gardens were upgraded in 2017 to include a broader variety of vegetables and expan

ded to more rooftops in Caojiadu, which also helps children learn about cultivating crops and vegetables.

If the UK government approves the use of Huawei techn

ology in 5G networks, close allies might be less inclined to work with it in the future, the RUSI report warned.

America’s fight with Huawei is messing with the world‘s 5G plans

Britain is part of the intelligence-sharing group know

n as Five Eyes, which also includes the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

”The maintenance of a ‘Five Eyes standard’ of cyber security in telecommunications is a vital strategic and secur

ity interest, the loss of which would go far beyond a reduction in intelligence reports exchanged and might lea

d to the UK being excluded from work on developing future technologies for intelligence collection,” the report said.

It also advised devoting more resources to protecting British universities, where technology of interest to Beijing may be under development.

”Ultimately, the United Kingdom’s goal must be genuine reciproc

ity and an equal, mature and comprehensive relationship with China,” the report said.

Jethro Mullen contributed to this report.

Ministry of Education addresses Zhai plagiarism case

The Ministry of Education has zero tolerance for academic misconduct and has ordered relevant universities and education authorities to investigate pl

agiarism allegations leveled at actor Zhai Tianlin, a ministry spokeswoman said on Friday.

The investigation will not only include Zhai’s plagiarism allegations, but also possible miscond

uct of other people that allowed this to happen, ministry spokeswoman Xu Mei said at a news conference.

“We have zero tolerance for behaviors that ignore academic rules and standards and undermine education equality,” she said.

The universities and Beijing education authorities will seriously look i

nto the case and publish the investigation’s results as soon as possible, she added.

The Beijing Education Commission and the Education Work Committee of the

Beijing Committee of the Communist Party of China sent an investigative team to

the Beijing Film Academy - where Zhai got his PhD-to look into the matter, the academy said on Thursday.
